Design Your Infrastructure to Minimize Risk

Your facility’s design sets the tone for everything that follows. Start with non-porous, easily cleanable surfaces—walls, floors, ceilings. Skip drywall and textured finishes as they tend to  trap pathogens. 

It’s also wise to separate your zones. Use dedicated HVAC for each room, and block cross-contamination with high-efficiency filtration and directional airflow. HEPA filters aren’t overkill—they’re your first line of defense. In fact, positive pressure systems help push contaminants out instead of letting them drift in. 

As for doors, make them self-closing. For busy areas, install air curtains. Finally, modular grow rooms offer a major upgrade: they’re easy to clean, isolate (if there ever is a pathogen infestation in one area), and scale. 

Control What—and Who—Comes In

Employees carry the highest risk for bringing pathogens inside, but here’s what you can do: 

Every team member should wear clean gear daily, so consider requiring facility-only uniforms or single-use coveralls and not outside clothing. Add shoe covers or use a sanitizing footbath at all main entries as well—no exceptions. You might even consider setting up a decontamination zone at every transition point—from street to grow floor.

In terms of who is actually allowed access, be sure to limit who can enter sensitive spaces like mother and propagation rooms. These zones need strict clearance. A good way to handle this is to make sign-ins mandatory and block access to production areas. Train your team to treat these control measures like clockwork. 

Cleanliness

Cleanliness is one of the most impactful ways you can mitigate the risk of pathogen infestation. But to be clear, surface wipe-downs won’t cut it. Schedule deep cleans on rotation—daily, weekly, monthly. Disinfect tools every time they move between plant groups or rooms, and swap standard containers and equipment for microbe-resistant versions wherever you can. 

When it comes to gloves, use only one pair for one task. Get rid of standing water the moment it appears, because it’s a breeding ground. Even pockets of high-moisture air can breed pathogens, so watch for humid corners that escape airflow. 

Build a Prevention-First Protocol

Don’t wait for a contamination issue to take biosafety seriously. Start by directly integrating prevention strategies into your onboarding process—every team member should understand the risks from day one and know how to prevent them. From there, build the cleaning and operational directives discussed above directly into your daily standard operating procedures. These shouldn’t be reactive steps but rather a part of your routine. Take it a step further and schedule audits to keep everyone sharp and identify weak spots. And if a contamination or close call does happen, use it as a learning opportunity and update your protocol immediately.
